About Hospital Cover
Hospital cover helps cover your costs when you are admitted to hospital as a private patient for services like:
- Your accommodation fees
- Your theatre, labour ward and intensive care fees
- Doctor’s fees for procedures performed in hospital
- Tests performed and medications prescribed whilst admitted to hospital.

Waiting Periods
A waiting period is a specific period after a new cover has commenced during which benefits are not payable or benefits are only payable as per the entitlements of a previous cover or policy for treatment received.
Government Rebate
The Australian Government Health Insurance rebate is the amount the Australian Government contributes to your private health insurance to reduce your premiums, to make private health insurance more affordable for all.
Lifetime Health Cover
The Lifetime Health Cover loading (sometimes referred to as LHC) is an Australian Government initiative designed to encourage you to take out Hospital cover earlier in life, and to keep it.
Medicare Levy
Surcharge
The Medicare Levy Surcharge (MLS) is an additional levy of up to 1.5% above the standard 2% some taxpayers pay. The MLS is imposed on Australians who earn above $90,000 and don’t have an appropriate level of private Hospital cover.
Reducing medical expenses
You can reduce or eliminate the gap you pay when claiming on your Hospital cover by taking advantage of the Health Partners’ Access Gap Scheme.
Youth Discount
The Youth Discount is an initiative designed by the Australian Government that allows Private Health Insurers to offer a premium discount on hospital cover for 18 to 29 year olds.

The Private Health Insurance Ombudsman (PHIO) can provide free and independent advice and may be contacted by calling 1300 362 072.
The office of the Private Health Insurance Ombudsman has produced the following website privatehealth.gov.au to enable consumers to search for, and compare, selected features for all private health insurance products offered in Australia. You can find basic information on all Health Partners products in the website for the purpose of comparison only.
Private Health Information Statement
To find the Private Health Information Statement (PHIS) relevant to the cover you are on, click here, and take the following steps:
- Click on ‘Health Insurers’ from the top menu or click the ‘Find Insurers’ button
- Select Health Partners from the list
- From here, click the Policies tab. Complete your details and click the cover name to view the PHIS.
