The importance of Extras Cover
Extras cover is an important part of Australia's healthcare system, providing coverage for various out-of-hospital health services not typically included in Medicare. It's designed to complement the public healthcare system, helping cover the cost for services such as dental care, optical, physio and a range of other services.
Keep in mind that extras cover generally doesn't cover the full cost of most services. Most policies contribute a percentage of the full cost up to annual limits for each service category. But even partial coverage can make a big difference over time.

Extras Waiting Periods
Typically, there's a 2-month waiting period before you can claim benefits for most extras. However, some services require a longer 12-month waiting period. Check the Individual Cover Details for specific information.
If you're switching from another fund, your previously served waiting periods transfer with you. This means you won't have to re-serve waiting periods for equivalent services. Find out more information on waiting periods.
