What's the Youth Discount?
It’s an initiative designed by the Australian Government that allows Private Health Insurers to offer a premium discount on hospital cover for 18 to 29 year olds.
This discount is completely voluntary, meaning insurers aren’t obligated to give the discount. Health Partners is committed to making hospital cover more affordable for not only younger Australians, but all members, so we are applying the discount to all hospital products for new and existing members.
How does it work?
It’s an aged-based discount. Meaning the younger you are when you takeout hospital cover, the higher your discount. Once you have your age-based discount, it stays with you until you turn 41.
| Your age at discount assessment date | Your discount |
|---|
| 18-25 | 10% |
| 26 | 8% |
| 27 | 6% |
| 28 | 4% |
| 29 | 2% |
| 30 | 0% |
Stick with us and you'll keep saving
Not only will you continue receiving confusion-free hospital cover, but you’ll get your discount every year, till you turn 41. After your 41st birthday, your discount will reduce by 2% per year until it reaches zero.
If you upgrade or downgrade your hospital cover your discount will still stay in place.
Couples and family discounts
If you’re on couples or family cover, your total discount will be an average of your individual discounts. For example, if you’re 26 years old with an 8% discount and your partner is aged 27 with a 6% discount, your discount will average out to 7%.
What if one person is over 30?
If one person is over the age of 30, the discount will only apply to the eligible person’s proportion of the premium.
For example, if you’re 28 with a 4% discount and your partner is 34 (0% discount), a 4% discount will be applied to your proportion of the premium. This will be displayed as a 2% over your entire membership, as your discount will be averaged out.
Why is it important?
The private health insurance system relies on a broad membership base. By offering the Youth Discount we’re helping make hospital cover more affordable, not only for younger Australians but all of our members.
Having hospital cover gives choice and control that the public system can’t.
- Skip public hospital waiting lists
- Decide where you’ll be treated
- Choose your specialist
- Have the same specialist care for you from start to finish
- Recover in the privacy and comfort of your own room – something that can’t be undervalued
