Mouthguards

The importance of wearing mouthguards during sport

If your child plays a contact sport like footy or soccer, you’ll know just how important a mouthguard is for protecting their developing teeth.

Benefits of wearing a mouthguard

  • Best protection for your teeth during contact sport
  • Protect jaw joints and soft tissues
  • Cushion teeth against impact
  • Help prevent injuries to your jaw and neck.

Disadvantages of not wearing a mouthguard

Without a mouthguard, your child’s teeth are in danger of experiencing trauma and can be painful and expensive to fix. Wearing a mouthguard will protect their teeth from:

  • Getting chipped
  • Becoming fractured
  • Getting knocked out
  • Cutting your lips and gums.

Custom-fitted mouthguards provide the best protection for your teeth

A custom-fitted mouthguard is not only the best way to protect young teeth on the field - it can also be made in your child’s favourite colours.

How do custom mouthguards provide the best protection?

  • Fit properly
  • Comfortable to wear
  • Provide optimal protection
  • Won’t restrict your breathing
  • Can be made in different colours

How custom-fitted mouthguards are made

At Health Partners, our team will:

  1. Examine your teeth.
  2. Take impressions or digital scans of your teeth.
  3. Contact you when the mouthguard is ready to be collected or fitted after a week.

How to clean your mouthguard

  • Rinse your mouthguard before and after use.
  • Wash it only with soap and in cold or lukewarm water.
  • Clean the inner surface with a soft toothbrush or nailbrush after wear.
  • Store in a clean, rigid and ventilated plastic container.
  • Keep it away from sunlight and heat to ensure it doesn’t lose shape.
  • At your regular dental check-ups, ask your dentist to check your mouthguard for any signs of wear and tear.

Common Mouthguard Questions

Are over-the-counter mouthguards OK to use?

Over-the-counter mouthguards are generally poorly fitted, provide minimal protection and may affect your speech, breathing and swallowing.

Can you wear a mouthguard with braces?

If you are involved in a collision, braces can be expensive and difficult to repair. Please speak to your orthodontist to discuss the options before having a mouthguard made.
