Why Your Flu Protection Needs a Yearly Update

There’s nothing quite like a beautiful winter morning in South Australia. As the morning air turns sharp and you find yourself reaching for your jacket as you head out the door, the change of seasons is definitely unmistakable! But along with the return of that favourite hoodie to the rotation comes the inevitable arrival of winter bugs.

While many vaccinations we receive as kids last a lifetime, the flu is a different thing altogether. And you might be wondering if you really need the flu shot every year?

As your flu-fighting partner, we’re here to help you understand the "why" behind the annual jab so you can make the best decision not only for your health, but for those around you.

A Moving Target: The Ever-Changing Virus

The main reason we need a new flu shot every year isn't because the vaccine wears off in the traditional sense, but because the influenza virus is ever-changing. Think of it like your phone’s software. Every year, there’s a new update that looks and behaves a little different from the last.

Global health experts monitor these changes and update the vaccine to match the most likely strains, giving your immune system the most relevant instruction manual to fight off the current version of the virus.

"Make sure you stay protected this flu season - your flu vaccine is updated yearly to match circulating strains”, says Xin Ng, Pharmacist Manager at Health Partners Participating Pharmacy, Blooms the Chemist.

Quick Reminder: Cold vs. Flu

It is easy to mistake the flu for a common cold, but knowing the difference helps you seek the right care. While a cold is a nuisance with mild symptoms like a runny nose or scratchy throat, the flu is a serious respiratory illness that can lead to severe complications.

A common cold usually has a gradual onset but the flu often hits at a rapid speed. One hour you’re fine, and the next you’re shivering with significant muscle aches and a high fever. It’s important to know the difference. Here’s a simple guide to help you work out, is it just a cold, or something more serious?

Why Immunity Fades Over Time

Even if flu strains stayed the same, our body’s immune response to the vaccine naturally declines over time. Research shows that protection is strongest in the first three to four months after receiving the vaccine. By the time a full year has passed, your level of antibodies has usually dropped significantly. By getting an annual shot, you reset your immune system, ensuring you have the highest possible level of protection just as we hit the peak flu months.

Protecting our Community

When you get your annual flu shot, you aren't just protecting yourself, you’re helping to protect those around you who might be more vulnerable. This includes:

  • Young children and babies
  • Older South Australians
  • Pregnant women
  • People living with chronic health conditions like asthma or heart disease

When more of us are vaccinated, it’s harder for the virus to spread through our schools, childcare centres, workplaces and the general community. It’s a team effort, and every flu shot counts.
