Save on genetic testing for your eye health

Glaucoma is an eye condition that can damage the optic nerve, which carries visual information from your eye to your brain. Over time, this damage can lead to permanent vision loss.  If left untreated, glaucoma can gradually affect more of your vision and, in some cases, lead to blindness.

AMD is an eye condition that affects the macula, the part of the eye responsible for clear, detailed central vision. It becomes more common as we get older and can affect everyday activities such as reading, driving and recognising faces.  As AMD progresses, it can lead to significant loss of central vision.

PRS testing can give you an indication of your genetic risk of developing AMD or glaucoma compared with others.

It’s not a diagnosis and can’t tell you for certain whether you will or won’t develop either condition. Your genetics are just one part of the picture, so your optometrist will consider your result alongside other factors when discussing your eye health with you.

PRS testing isn’t something everyone needs.

As part of your eye test appointment, your optometrist might speak to you about these tests, if they think it’s appropriate to your health or family history. The test provides additional information about your individual genetic risk profile, helping you and your optometrist better understand your risk of developing Glaucoma or AMD.

Testing is voluntary, and you can decide whether it’s right for you after discussing it with your optometrist.

The test involves a simple cheek swab to collect a DNA sample. Most results will be available within 2 - 3 weeks of the lab receiving your sample. 

For a limited time, Health Partners members can access introductory pricing on PRS testing at Health Partners Optical:

• $200 for AMD or glaucoma 
• $300 for combined AMD and glaucoma 

Introductory pricing is available from 1 September to 30 November 2026.

After the introductory period, standard pricing of $349 for an individual test and $445 for a combined test will apply.

• Polygenic Risk Score (PRS) Testing available to patients attending a comprehensive eye examination where the optometrist determines the test is clinically appropriate.

• Participating in PRS testing is voluntary. Patients are not required to undertake testing as part of their eye examination or ongoing care.
• Health Partners Optical reserves the right to only provide PRS testing for certain age ranges for clinical reasons.
• Clinic sessions days and times may vary from store to store.
• During the introductory offer period, eligible patients may access a Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) or Glaucoma PRS test for $200, or a combined Glaucoma and AMD PRS test for $300. Following the introductory offer period, the standard fee will be $349 for a single AMD or Glaucoma PRS test, or $445 for a combined AMD and Glaucoma PRS test.
• PRS testing provides information about genetic risk factors associated with Glaucoma and/or AMD, depending on the test undertaken. Results do not diagnose Glaucoma or AMD, predict with certainty whether a person will develop either condition, or replace regular eye examinations and clinical assessment
• Patients should discuss their individual results and eye health needs with their optometrist or appropriate healthcare professional.
