In my early teens I enjoyed a fairly healthy life until I was struck down with Rheumatoid Arthritis. Several years later, I succumbed to Lupus.
I am now 58 years old and severely restricted. I can hardly walk through the effects of SLE, collateral damage caused by controlling medications and a stroke. Three years ago a perforated bowel necessitated the need of a colostomy bag.
My husband and I have been married for 33 years and we find it difficult to sustain a normal life. But we try. He has to watch me suffer a great deal of pain. And this hurts him as much as me.
Regular visits to doctors, specialists, podiatrists, opticians, dentists as well as constant blood tests sometimes make life hard to bear. My husband is my full time carer since resigning from his position as a Project Manager three years ago to support me throughout this whole ordeal. He does all the household things that I used to do (and miss) and thankfully is a great chef! Every day we enjoy eating good food with a glass of wine – we never take that for granted.
I have lost more than 20kg since my last episode of illness, which included nerve-damaging hematomas. I now weigh only 40kg and after losing so much weight, I need a whole new wardrobe of clothes!
I have had top cover with Health Partners for more than forty years and they have been with me through every health related episode along the way. I thank Health Partners and all their caring and helpful staff – I would be lost without them and what they provide. I cannot stress enough the importance of health insurance and I feel so blessed to live in Australia where we enjoy good medical professionals and facilities.
Life still goes on. I try and keep positive and am thankful for all the good things no matter how small and inexpensive that I have and am still able to enjoy.
