Not all regions of Australia have access to healthcare, for some the closest provider could be over 500km away. Our Morphett Vale dentist, Dr Vaibhav Garg, recently took part in the first Royal Flying Doctors Dental Service trip to the Northern Territory, learn more about his trip below.
In May, Dr Vaibhav Garg of Health Partners Dental Morphett Vale, was part of the first Dental Service trip to the Northern Territory with the Royal Flying Doctor Service Central Operations. Here he joined a team of skilled dentists tasked with staffing the dental clinic located in Kintore of the Pintupi Homelands.
Dr Garg describes the natural beauty of this region as sitting in stark contrast with the challenges of achieving good health outcomes in Kintore; “landing in Kintore was a spectacular introduction the lands surrounding Lake Mackay and the Gibson Desert.”
The rate of kidney disease in Kintore is 50 times that in urban areas and the closest Paediatric emergency treatment available for community members is located 500km west of Kintore in Alice Springs.
Upon arriving in this community he felt a strong desire within the community to improve everyone’s health and they were inundated with community members of all ages wanting to have their teeth looked at.
Dr Garg says, “In the time I have worked at Health Partners I have gained a large number of skills working with evidence based best practices and latest technologies. The in-house depth of knowledge in areas such as; Special Needs Dentistry, Paediatric Dentistry and NSQHS Dental Accreditation have become an invaluable resource. This support from Health Partners has been instrumental in developing our ability to provide essential oral health services in one of the most remote parts of Australia. There is no better reward than the happy smiles waiting for us on our next trip.”
