Try lenses designed for our digital world

Desktop, mobile, tablet, TV – how many hours do you spend looking at screens?

We spend an average of 10 hours each day in front of screens. Because our eyes aren’t designed to look at millions of glowing pixels all day, overuse of digital devices can lead to digital eye strain which can cause:

  • Red and dry eyes
  • Tired eyes and blurred vision
  • Headaches
  • Neck, shoulder or back pain

Our eyes’ natural filters also don’t provide suitable protection against the blue light that radiates from digital screens. Studies have shown that long exposure to blue light over time can lead to serious long-term damage to your eyes.

What is blue light?

Blue light is everywhere, in fact sunlight is the main source. The colours of the sun’s spectrum combine to create the white light that we can see. At the blue end of the colour spectrum, the rays have shorter wavelengths and more energy. Light that looks white can have a larger blue component,  exposing our eyes to a higher amount of wavelength from the blue end of the spectrum.

But we’re also inundated with man-made blue light, most notably the screens of TVs, computers, smartphones and other digital devices. The amount of blue light exposure from screens is small compared to that of the sun, however, it’s the proximity of the screens and amount of time we spend looking at them which raises concerns.

How does blue light affect our eyes?

Almost all blue light travels through the cornea and lens to the retina. This light may affect vision and could age the eyes prematurely.

Research shows that too much exposure to blue light could lead to:

Digital eye strain: the decrease in contrast caused by the blue light from digital screens can lead to digital eye strain with symptoms such as dry, sore eyes, fatigue and difficulty focusing.

Retinal damage: studies suggest that continued exposure to blue light over time can cause damage to the retinal cells, which may cause vision problems such as age-related macular degeneration.

At Health Partners Optical we’ve got a range of solutions to protect against blue light and help reduce digital eye strain.
