What causes tired eyes?

There are a number of potential causes for tired or strained eyes – too little sleep, reading or staring at a computer for long periods of time, or you might need to update your prescription glasses or contact lenses.

The symptoms

Be on the lookout for:

  • Sore or irritated eyes
  • Trouble focusing
  • Dry or watery eyes
  • Blurred or double vision
  • Increased sensitivity to light
  • Pain in the shoulders, neck or back.

How do you treat tired eyes?

We recommend getting an eye test if you haven’t had one in two years as your eyes change naturally over time – the solution might be as simple as updating your prescription eyewear. Adding anti-reflection coating to your glasses to reduce glare also helps to alleviate the strain on our eyes.

If you work on computer all day then try switching to lenses designed specifically for screen use. The latest technology allows lenses to be tailor-made to suit both short and intermediate distances making them perfect for wearing at the computer, plus most digital lenses also filter out harmful blue light that’s emitted from digital screens. Click here for more information on digital lenses.

Other ways to reduce eye strain include:

  • Take regular breaks when you’re focusing on something for a long time, be it reading or driving.
  • Make sure you get enough sleep.
  • Check your lighting – an evenly lit room means your eyes don’t have to work as hard.
  • Choose a modern LCD computer screen and adjust the brightness and contrast settings for more comfortable vision.

If you’re worried about your eye health book an eye test today. Early detection is vital in treating any eye condition.
