Caring for your child’s oral health begins before they even get their first tooth.
When should I make their first dentist appointment?
You should schedule your child’s first dental appointment between the ages of 1 and 2 however if at any time you have concerns, make an appointment for a check-up with your Health Partners dentist. Prevention is better than a cure and you know best if something doesn’t feel right with your child.
Their first appointment
Our dental team are experienced in working with children and will take a full medical history and look at factor’s such as your child’s overall health and development during their first appointment. They will discuss teething, brushing, bite (how your child’s teeth will come together), soft tissues such as gums and cheeks, habits like thumb sucking, preventing decay and trauma and nutritional advice with you. Ask as many questions as your need and use this time to become as informed about your child’s oral health as you can be.
After their first appointment, your dentist will guide you in how often they require check-ups but as a rule we recommend at least one check-up a year.
The Child Dental Benefits Schedule
The Child Dental Benefits Schedule (Grow up Smiling) is a dental benefits program for eligible children aged 2-17 years.
Benefits cover a range of services including examinations, x-rays, cleaning, fissure sealing, fillings, root canals and extractions.
In 2014, benefits for basic dental services are capped at $1,000 per child over 2 consecutive calendar years. If you do not use all of your $1,000 benefit in the first year of eligibility, you can use it in the second year if you are still eligible. Any remaining balance will not be carried forward at the end of the second year.
You are encouraged to keep a personal record of your limit throughout the course of the two year eligibility period. Once you have reached your $1,000 limit, Health Partners benefits will apply according to your level of cover. Medicare benefits claimed at a dentist outside of Health Partners will affect your $1,000 limit if you return to Health Partners dental for further treatment
Please advise that you wish to use this program when booking your appointment and remember to bring your Medicare card to each appointment. Children under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to give consent for the treatment to take place.
