Government rebates

The Australian Government Rebate on Private Health Insurance was introduced as a financial incentive to help Australians afford private health cover. The rebate depends on your age, is income-tested and applies to all Health Partners products. The rebate may be claimed as a reduction in your contributions or via your tax return and we can help you nominate your most suitable rebate tier.

The rebate is indexed by the lesser of CPI or the percentage change in your premium each year, using a Government calculated formula. The table below shows the income and age tiers effective 1 April 2017:

How to apply the rebate

Claiming the Rebate

You may claim the rebate as a reduction in your contributions by nominating a Rebate Tier. Alternatively, you can claim the rebate via your tax return.

Please note that if you have a Lifetime Health Cover (LHC) loading, the rebate is not claimable on the LHC component of your private health cover premiums.

Nominating a rebate tier

Use the table above to determine your Rebate Tier.

You can nominate a tier:

Note: There is no penalty for choosing the incorrect rebate tier for your private health insurance policy. When you complete your income tax return, the ATO will review the rebate tier you have elected against your taxable income. If you have not claimed enough, you will be reimbursed for that amount, however you may acquire a tax debt if you have claimed too much.
